2021 Perli Vineyard Syrah
The Perli Vineyard lies within the Mendocino Coast Ridge area also known as the Mendocino Ridge AVA. This vineyard is ten miles from the ocean at 2200 ft elevation on a steep north eastern slope. This 23 year old vineyard is farmed by Steve Alden. We source both the McDowell selection and the 877 clone from this coastal ridge site. The McDowell selection is notable as it is the oldest field selection of Syrah in North America, brought into California to the San Jose Mission in 1880 and later planted on the McDowell Ranch in Mendocino County in 1902. This classic cool climate Syrah just gets better each vintage. Vineyard maturity coupled with and excellent vintage are at the forefront here. Made in the tradition of the Northern Rhone, Jason co ferments 5% Viognier with this Syrah which lifts the aromatics. On the nose purple violets, blue and black fruits, cured meat, subtle white pepper, anise, black olives and iron mineral notes. On the palate, blackberry, juniper berries, prosciutto, black olives, pink peppercorns with a hint of orange peel. A gorgeous food wine to enjoy with a slow roasted lamb shank or a mushroom bourguignon. Enjoy!
