Bahl Briney is a Boontling( our local slang dialect) term meaning excellent quality from our coastal region. This appellation blend Chardonnay is unique as it is sourced from two sites on opposite sides of Anderson Valley. The first being the Valenti Ranch , a mid elevation site (1250-1400ft) along the west ridge of Anderson Valley, 6 miles from the ocean. This hillside vineyard faces north east and is perched on a cool slope facing Anderon Valley below. Clow Ridge Vineyard is located on the eastern ridge of Anderson Valley at approximately 1,000 ft elevation facing south west . The soils on both sites are a mélange of ancient oceanic sedimentary materials that include gravelly sandy loams with high Iron content, rocky quartzite, decomposed sandstone and shale with varying degrees of clay. The aromas consist of crushed rocks and flint with meyer lemon and lychee notes. The entry is fresh and vibrant with citrus, stone fruits and wet stones with a touch of salinity hinting its coastal proximity. There is an elegance and energy to this wine that aligns the mineral and energized fruit notes consistently from the front of the palate to the back. This lean beautiful Chardonnay is zesty and balanced with energized intensity while still being light on its feet. Pair with fresh king salmon or your favorite creamy cheeses.
"The 2018 Chardonnay Bahl Briney offers tons of nuance and textural dimension, not to mention quite a bit of sheer character. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure and feel, the 2018 has a lot going on. Tangerine, mint, vanillin, sage, mint and light tropical inflections all run through this super-expressive, inviting Chardonnay from Jason Drew. I especially like the savory, mineral expression in the 2018."
